Plenty of people who visit Athens do not realise that there are two absolute gems in front of them, waiting to be explored!  Lycabettus and Philiopappos Hills are an adventurous traveller’s dream!

Lycabettus stands at 271 metres altitude and rises abruptly above the city’s skyline.  The white buildings of Athens, suddenly turn into dense pine forest that culminates in a rocky, pointy summit at the top where the chapel of St George is.  Here you get the best 360-degree views of Athens.  Despite its breathtaking views and free admission, only a very tiny percentage of visitors to Athens actually visit it.

The hike to the top is part of the thrill as the urban landscape abruptly meets nature.  After Lycabettus, the next stop is Philopappou, the much smaller of the two, but offers a very different perspective of the Acropolis, the sea and and city in general.  The mornings there are peaceful and the sunsets are superb as it’s one of the least crowded spots to watch sunset.
